#5A poet with a social conscience, she was born in New York in 1849. In protest of the pogroms occurring against other Jews living in Russia, she wrote the 1882 Songs of a Semite. Her best-known work is the poem "The New Colossus," which has since been engraved on the Statue of liberty’s base.
